Cuando vemos la televisión siempre vemos la típica película mala, de bajo presupuesto, con actores no conocidos y un argumento malo. Bueno pues basicamente con eso podriamos describir lo que es una película de serie B: producción de baja calidad, poco presupuesto y actores no conocidos. Y para saber el porque de este cine tenemos que irnos despues del crack del 29, cuando hubo una bajada de la audiencia debido a la crisis economica que había. En esa epoca existia el Studio system, star system y cine de generos, esos tres polos maximizaban los beneficios al menor coste. Por aquella epoca las majors (productoras) se esmeraban en controlar la producción, la distribución y la exhibición, pero debido a la crisis que habia tuvieron que reformular esto último. El sistema era que habian diferentes giras, en la primera, la entrada era más cara que normalmente ya que era el estreno. En la segunda gira, el precio iba reduciendose cada vez más y además se hacia lo que se llama la doble función en la que veías dos películas por el precio de una. La primera era generalmente la película buena, es decir la Serie A, y la segunda era una película de bajo presupuesto, que aún hacía mejor a la primera película, y se le denominó la Serie B. Se empezaron a crear en las productoras, un departamento que se encargaba únicamente de la producción de estas películas. Éstas eran muy rentables ya que costaban muy poco y conseguian grandes resultados en taquilla.
Pero pronto empezó a verse el final para este tipo de cine debido a dos motivos, el primero es que las productoras tenian el control de todo, y eso va en contra de la ley del monopolio, con lo cual ya no podian asegurar la distribución y su visionado en los cines, y por otra parte con la llegada de la televisión en los años 50, que con las series de western supuso un gran golpe a la doble función y a las películas de serie B. Aunque siempre se habla de actores poco conocidos, Humphrey Bogart salio a la fama gracias al cine B, y muchos directores se han inspirado en este tipo de cine para realizar sus películas como Peter Jackson en “Tu madre se ha comido a mi perro” o Quentin Tarantino que siente gran afinidad por este tipo de cine o su colega mejicano Alex Rodriguez. La tematica de estas películas siempre solía ser o bien de terror o de ciencia ficción, y se caracterizan por unos efectos especiales un tanto rústicos.
De la Serie B, surgió tambien el subgenero Z, que aún tenia un presupuesto y calidad aún peor. Se considera la primera película como Serie Z la dirigida por Ed Wood, Plan 9 from outer Space. Este director esta considerado como el peor de la historia, y esa película como una de las peores que se han hecho, aún y así esta considerada como una película de culto. Tambien como clase Z podriamos encontrarnos con muchos films de la época de ninjas, donde mezclaban historias muy diferentes, se cogía una película previamente producida en Asia y la mezclaban con escenas de americanos vestidos de ninja y sin que supieran de artes marciales.
