Con un título escueto pero no por ello menos acertado, ésta obra de Akira Kurosawa apareció en 1952.
Con Takashi Shimura, un actor muy ligado a la filmografía de Kurosawa, al frente del reparto, Vivir destila realidad en cada fotograma y se presenta como una de esas películas que hacen que el espectador se plantee cosas después de verla.
La historia es sencilla: Kanji Watanabe es un funcionario del gobierno que vive una vida rutinaria. Durante treinta años no ha faltado jamás a su puesto de trabajo, y en lo personal, se dedicó a criar a su hijo tras quedar viudo. En la actualidad, su hijo y su nuera viven con él aunque el trato existente entre ellos es prácticamente nulo.
Todo cambia cuando Watanabe descubre que tiene cáncer de estómago y que apenas le queda un año de vida. Desde ese momento decide tomar las riendas de su vida, pero se da cuenta que no sabe cómo hacerlo pues hasta ese momento ésta solo ha girado en torno a sus obligaciones.
Como he dicho, la historia es sencilla e incluso la hemos visto repetida mil veces en películas posteriores, pero en realidad no es más que un telón de fondo para que podamos ver las relaciones acciones y reacciones de sus personajes…
Personalmente, creo que el encanto de la película no es tanto la evolución sufrida por el protagonista, si no las reacciones y actitudes de su entorno, quienes no saben nada de su enfermedad por motivos diversos.
Película muy recomendable pese a sus dos grandes peros: por un lado su excesiva duración, dos horas y veinte minutos; y por otro la lentitud de algunos momentos a nivel narrativo.
